Your competitor filed while you were still drafting
In the IP race, the delay before a supported filing is the real cost. AI changed the speed of invention; most IP workflows did not. The route from an inventor's idea to a filing still runs through forms, email and disconnected tools.
AI doesn't change the legal rules of priority. It changes the tempo around them.
What is a provisional patent application?
A provisional application is an early, simpler first filing. It gives your invention a filing date, which becomes its priority date. You then have 12 months to decide where to file complete applications. Those later filings can claim the earlier date under the Paris Convention.
The rule most people miss: priority is valuable only for what the filing actually supports. An early provisional establishes a date for the subject matter adequately disclosed in it. Material added later does not automatically inherit that date.
So the goal is not to file weak material fast. It is to remove administrative delay while improving the disclosure and evidence available before filing. That is why Gate IP searches before it files.
Why file in Singapore?
Singapore lets an applicant secure a filing date quickly and complete the application within 12 months. It is English-language, fast and part of the Paris Convention network, which makes it an efficient place for a first priority filing, with international protection decided later with your counsel.
- From S$170 official filing fee
- 12 months to decide on international filings
- Priority can be claimed in other Paris Convention countries
Check before you file abroad. Some countries require inventions made there to be filed at home first, or to obtain a foreign-filing licence or security clearance (for example the United States for US-made inventions). Gate IP flags this, but confirm your situation with your patent counsel.
The Gate IP Search Standard
Finding documents isn't the goal. Building enough evidence to reach a reliable conclusion is. A patentability search you can trust meets six checks, whoever or whatever runs it: an AI agent, a professional searcher or an attorney.
- Multiple search tools. 2–3 complementary systems surface different art.
- Iterative searching. Several loops per tool, each informing the next query.
- Inventive-feature mapping. The invention is broken into features, and each is mapped to the closest references.
- Patent and NPL evidence. Scientific and technical literature, not only patents.
- Exact supporting passages. The passages behind the analysis are kept, not just the citations.
- Search traceability. Queries, iterations, discarded paths, and why the search stopped.
Search is a loop, not a button: Frame → Explore → Learn → Test → Verify → Map → Conclude.
If your last patentability search didn't include these, don't trust it.
What an evidence package looks like
The output of search should be a structured, traceable package, not a list of links. Below is an extract from a real Ambercite run on a sample invention.
Sample subject: Self-aligning coupling for a rotary valve actuator (patentability assessment)
- F1: compliant coupling that accommodates angular shaft misalignment
- F2: preload element that maintains contact under thermal expansion
- F3: integrated feedback confirming the valve is seated, with no external sensor
| Document | Owner | F1 | F2 | F3 | Class |
| US6079210A | Woodward | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ | X |
| US6719103B1 | — | ✓ | ✗ | ✗ | X |
| US2009/0293654 | — | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ | X |
| US8118276B2 | Rotork | ✗ | ✗ | ✓ | X |
| US5223822A | Stonel | ✗ | ✗ | ✓ | Y |
| US2008/0017816 | Arvin | ✗ | ✓ | ✗ | Y |
White space: each feature is disclosed on its own somewhere. What was not found is seating confirmation drawn from the compliant, preloaded coupling itself: a closed-loop "valve is seated" signal with no separate sensor.
Conclusion: potentially at risk on F1, F2 and F3 individually. Confidence: medium. Next: read the full claims of US6079210A and US8118276B2, then narrow the claims to the integrated combination.
A €2,500 report becomes an automated evidence workflow. A patentability report at this depth is traditionally quoted at around €2,500. Here it is produced inside the workflow: high-quality evidence, ready before expensive human judgment is applied.
AI informs the decision. Humans own it.
The output of search is not "AI says patentable". It is an evidence package that makes human legal, technical and business judgment faster and better informed. Patentability is only one input to a filing decision. Commercial importance, detectability, competitive position, timing, budget and alternatives such as secrecy all count. The decision belongs to a governance process, not a model.
Automate evidence preparation, not accountability.
How to patent an idea with Gate IP, in five steps
- Invention disclosure. A guided interview captures what's new and structures your idea. How the disclosure interview works
- Patentability search. A search that meets the Gate IP Search Standard. Analyse, strengthen and iterate with AI.
- Provisional drafting. AI-assisted drafting and expert review, ready for filing.
- The gate. Early valuation and scoring: proceed, strengthen or stop.
- File in Singapore. We handle the filing and your priority date is secured.
This is not a concept. It has been run.
10 provisional patent applications filed in Singapore, through one repeatable workflow operated end to end.
- Every run: an advanced prior-art search fed both the disclosure and the drafting.
- Double duty: the white-space guidance either went back to the researcher to strengthen the disclosure, or went with the disclosure to the drafting AI to sharpen the application.
- The stack: an invention-capture chatbot → Airtable + Make → a prior-art search MCP that auto-generates the patentability report → a consolidated view for R&D, finance, management and investors.
Real filings. Real search. One connected workflow.

Provisional patent application FAQ
How long does a provisional application protect my invention?
It establishes a priority date. You have 12 months to file complete applications that claim it; after that the priority right is lost.
Does everything I add later keep the original date?
No. Priority covers only the subject matter adequately disclosed in the provisional. That is why disclosure quality and a search before filing matter.
Is a provisional application the same as a patent?
No. It is a first filing that secures your date. Protection depends on the complete applications you file later and on their examination.
Do I need a prior-art search before a provisional?
It isn't required, but it is strongly recommended. The search shows what is already known and how to describe the part that is not.
Can I file in Singapore if I'm not based in Singapore?
Often yes, but some countries restrict first filings abroad for inventions made there. Confirm with your counsel. Gate IP flags this during onboarding.
What happens after 12 months?
With your patent counsel, you decide where to pursue protection (for example through a PCT application or national filings) and claim the Singapore priority date.
Does Gate IP replace my patent attorney?
No. Gate IP is the workflow layer that connects capture, search, assessment and filing. Your counsel keeps strategy and international prosecution.
Capture better. Search deeper. Decide faster. Secure priority.
Run one real invention through it: structured disclosure, citation-based evidence package and Singapore priority date, in 1–2 days.
